{"id":1753,"date":"2015-04-20T23:54:28","date_gmt":"2015-04-21T03:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/appleworm.us\/?page_id=1753"},"modified":"2024-06-14T10:02:12","modified_gmt":"2024-06-14T14:02:12","slug":"black-marsh-daisy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/appleworm.us\/?page_id=1753","title":{"rendered":"Black Marsh Daisy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/appleworm.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/BMD_Roo_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1811\" src=\"https:\/\/appleworm.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/BMD_Roo_1-281x300.jpg\" alt=\"BMD_Roo_1\" width=\"281\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/appleworm.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/BMD_Roo_1-281x300.jpg 281w, https:\/\/appleworm.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/BMD_Roo_1-140x150.jpg 140w, https:\/\/appleworm.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/BMD_Roo_1.jpg 702w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/><\/a>In December 2014, Appleworm Orchard acquired Greenfire Farms&#8217; entire breeding flock of Black Marsh Daisies. \u00a0Several years earlier Greenfire had imported from England two different color patterns of this breed: brown\/red and black. \u00a0Greenfire continues to breed the brown\/red pattern.<\/p>\n<p>The Marsh Daisy is quite rare, but the black variety is especially scarce. \u00a0And delightful to watch. \u00a0The birds are very spry: Whenever they break out of their breeding pen &#8212; and they are always eager to do so &#8212; they choose to roost on the fence-rails and branches nearby. \u00a0They come home, of course, but not without a show. \u00a0They are also very productive and hardy; they are regular layers of medium-sized, chalk-white eggs and are extremely healthy. Almost all of their eggs hatch and mortality among the young is almost zero.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/appleworm.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/BMD_Hen_NonCrested.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2393\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2393\" src=\"https:\/\/appleworm.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/BMD_Hen_NonCrested-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"BMD_Hen_NonCrested\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/appleworm.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/BMD_Hen_NonCrested-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/appleworm.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/BMD_Hen_NonCrested-150x104.jpg 150w, https:\/\/appleworm.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/BMD_Hen_NonCrested-768x533.jpg 768w, https:\/\/appleworm.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/BMD_Hen_NonCrested-1024x711.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>There is, unfortunately, a cosmetic defect with the flock we acquired. \u00a0The breed standard &#8212; for all five color patterns &#8212; calls for a crestless bird. \u00a0When Greenfire began working with its black flock, it chose to &#8220;breed up&#8221; the crest with the result that the youngest generation is mostly crested. There was, fortunately, several birds in our acquired flock with no or slight crests. \u00a0(The photo on the right is of one of our crestless hens.)
